Awards to recognize and highlight HBAV members who exemplify leadership, engagement, and dedication to the success of the HBA, community, and the Virginia building industry. HBAV announced 20 awards during the 2022 Housing Excellence Awards Celebration on June 9, 2022, held at the Marriott Virginia Beach Oceanfront. Congratulations to all of our winners!

Distinguished Builder of the Year

Recognizes Home Builder Association Members who have made significant long-term contributions to the HBA, the building industry and community. We invite you to nominate a Builder member that you believe is deserving of this special honor. Self-nominations are accepted.

Executive Officer of the Year

Presented to an EO who has served more than three years in an association management position and is judged to have made major contributions to the profession during this time period. Eligible candidates must have served more than three years cumulatively by December 31, 2021 as an executive officer of an HBAV-affiliated local association.

Judging Criteria and Required Materials:
  • Candidates actions during the 2021 calendar year must have promoted the goals of their HBAs.
  • The candidate’s association management practices, concepts, techniques, and ideas during the 2021 calendar year must have assisted in the advancement of other EOs.
  • Local Association & Membership Activities: Committee and Board involvement; accomplishments in relation to the local association; participation in and support of the local association, its events and programs.
  • HBAV/NAHB Association & Membership Activities: Committee and Board involvement; accomplishments in relation to the associations; participation in and support of the association, its events and programs.
  • Civic Responsibility: Examples include community service projects, charity support and involvement, youth organizations, etc.

One-page summary, based on the judging criteria above, on why the nominee qualifies and should receive the award, one professional recommendation for the nominee from the local HBA, one high resolution photo of the nominee.

Best Humanitarian Member Project

Individual HBA Member projects can include: volunteer activities, charitable works, etc. outside of the HBA.

Judging Criteria and Required Materials:

Originality, concept, overall presentation and execution. Requires a completed entry form and six to eight photos and materials highlighting the initiative.

Construction Manager of the Year

Presented to an HBAV member who inspires, leads, and enables the very best delivery of a project and produces buildings that have a positive impact on those who use them.

Judging Criteria and Required Materials:

Obstacles overcome, organizational and planning skills, meeting budgets and goals, vendor relations, individual certification or designation, community and HBA involvement.

Submit number of projects managed, supervision responsibilities and overall company responsibilities. Requires a completed entry form and photo of nominee.

Sales Manager of the Year

Must be a full-time sales manager with recruiting, hiring, training, and supervising responsibilities.

Judging Criteria and Required Materials:

Challenges overcome, motivation and management style, recruiting and sales team training, industry activities, self-improvement pursued to increase managerial effectiveness, professional designations and HBA involvement.

Submit number of homes sold, estimated number of homes built in division, number of employees directed, number of tracts or communities, number of future projects, number of counties managed, and other functions supervised. Requires a completed entry form and a photo of nominee.

Remodeler of the Year

​The HBAV Remodeler of the Year recognizes superior business management, exemplary association involvement at all levels, and outstanding contributions to the remodeling industry.

Young Professional of the Year

​The HBAV Young Professional of the Year recognizes an HBAV member under 40 years of age and with less than 10 years in the building industry for outstanding leadership and dedication to the Virginia Housing Industry.

Judging Criteria and Required Materials:

Multifamily Project of the Year

Awards an HBAV member project for a new multifamily community showcasing the best in apartment and condo living.

Judging Criteria and Required Materials:

Overall exterior and interior architecture, design appeal, function, and creative use of interior space and creative integration of plan design as it related to its target market and sales success.

Requires a completed entry form, six to ten images that represent the entry, and a floor plan of the project.

Mortgage Professional of the Year

Presented to an HBA Member who displays superior business management, exemplary association involvement at all levels, and has made a long lasting impact on the HBA. Must be a full-time, mortgage professional. Self- nominations accepted.

Judging Criteria and Required Materials:

Obstacles overcome, outreach with builders, buyers and community, buyer satisfaction, builder communication, innovative techniques used and HBA involvement. 

Submit total number of homes closed in 2021, volume of closed sales and sales philosophy. Requires a project statement and photo of entrant/nominee.

Community of the Year

Awards an HBAV member project for a new single family or mixed use community design highlighting what home buyers want while keeping the project viable for the building community.

Judging Criteria and Required Materials:

Overall neighborhood design, unique design features, implementation and creativity of the marketing plan, effectiveness and continuity of marketing phases, overall quality of presentation and overall sales success.

Requires a completed entry form, community map or site-plan, and at least five photos of different aspects of the community.

Best Community Amenity

Awards the best HBAV member community amenity, such as pools, tennis courts, clubhouse, etc.

Judging Criteria and Required Materials:

Theme, effectiveness, function, creativity, and design used.

Requires a completed entry form, floor plan, and five to ten photos.

Best HBA Community Project / Program

Designed to provide community support and assistance.

Judging Criteria and Required Materials:

Organization, execution, creativity, community impact, goals achieved, level of engagement of association and members.

Requires a completed entry form and materials (photos, reports, etc.) highlighting the initiative.

Best HBA Educational Program

Awards successful programs, projects, or ideas that encourage and improve membership education and the number of qualified workers in the industry.

Judging Criteria and Required Materials:

Organization, execution, creativity, benefit to membership, level of member engagement and effectiveness.

Requires a completed entry form and materials (photos, reports, etc.) highlighting the initiative.

Best HBA Event or Special Program

May be an event or project designed to generate non dues revenue, honor members, highlight the HBA, etc.

Judging Criteria and Required Materials:

Organization, execution, creativity, impact, goals achieved, level of engagement of association and members.

Requires a completed entry form and materials (photos, reports, etc.) highlighting the initiative.

Best HBA Government Affairs Program

Any event or program created to advance housing issues or combat anti-housing proposals.

Judging Criteria and Required Materials:

Organization, execution, creativity, pro-housing impact, level of association and member engagement, goals achieved and effectiveness.

Requires a completed entry form and materials (photos, reports, etc.) highlighting the initiative.

Membership Cup

Awarded to one local HBA for achieving the most outstanding membership efforts of the year.

Judging Criteria and Required Materials:
  • Has a set and met challenging membership recruitment and retention goals
  • Has the most effective membership plan
  • Shows unparalleled percentage increase in both growth and retention during the previous year

Requires a completed entry form and materials (photos, reports, etc.) highlighting the initiative.

Builders Mutual Safety Program of the Year

Awarded to the builder or trade contractor who has developed, implemented and maintained a high-quality safety program.

Judging Criteria and Required Materials:
  • Quality of the company safety program
  • Management’s involvement in the safety culture
  • High level of employee or trade contractor involvement in safety
  • Effectiveness of the safety program
  • Hazard prevention and control
  • Safety and health training
  • New or innovative programs, practices, procedures, or resources used to promote safety
  • Unique program elements used to support and heighten safety awareness

 

Requires a completed entry form and responses to the following questions in paragraph form (350 words or less per questions). You may also include samples of any templates, materials, photos, or programs you use in your safety initiatives.

  1. Describe your company’s safety program.
  2. Why is your company’s safety program effective and how is it unique?
  3. Explain how your company’s management supports the safety program and involvement the employees play in safety culture.
  4. Explain your company’s procedures to correct or control present or potential safety hazards on the jobsite.

Marketing Manager of the Year

Recognizes a full-time, marketing manager who demonstrates marketing best practices for a Builder or Associate member company.

Judging Criteria and Required Materials:

Challenges overcome, motivation and management style, industry activities, self-improvement pursued to increase marketing effectiveness, professional designations, and HBA involvement. 

Contribution to marketing initiatives to the performance and success of the member company. Has the entrant/nominee shown innovative thinking in executing marketing initiatives? Please provide examples of marketing initiatives and a photo of the entrant/nominee.

Innovation Project of the Year

Honors an HBAV member for forward-thinking homebuilding to deliver Virginia homebuyers a better homeowner experience.

Judging Criteria and Required Materials:

Innovation will be based on housing productions techniques, energy efficiency, air quality, durability, sustainability, and resiliency.

Requires a completed entry form, eight to ten photos, and materials (reports, floor plans, etc.) highlighting the project.

Woman of the Year

The HBAV Woman of the Year recognizes a female builder or associate member for exemplary leadership in and dedication to the housing industry in Virginia. The HBAV Woman of the Year promotes diversity and inclusion, and encourages, leads, and creates opportunities for women in the Virginia Building Industry.

Judging Criteria and Required Materials:

About the Housing Excellence Awards

ELIGIBILITY

You must be a member of the Home Builders Association of Virginia (HBAV) to be considered for any award. Each award winner will be announced and recognized at the 4th Annual Housing Excellence Awards Celebration during the 2023 Annual Conference at The Greenbrier Resort.

  • Individual Achievements are based on performance between January 1, 2022 and December 31, 2022
  • Projects must have been completed between January 1, 2022 and March 31, 2023

ENTRY FEES & DEADLINES

  • Early Bird Entry $100
  • All entries (fees and materials) must be received on or before February 1, 2023.
  • Regular Entry $150
  • All entries (fees and materials) must be received no later than March 15, 2023.
  • Builders Mutual Award No entry fee.
  • HBA Awards No entry fee.

Carefully review all entry categories and judging criteria before preparing and submitting your entry form and supporting materials.

Please note that judges only receive your text submission and photos/materials submitted. It is crucial that your entry meets all judging requirements so that your entry can be judged effectively.

* All entries must be submitted electronically. File names should include award name. All materials submitted become the property of HBAV and will not be returned. Entry materials cannot be exchanged or modified after the final submission date.

*Please ensure all digital files are high quality and in color when possible. All photos should be submitted as JPEG, PNG, or PDF files. Any photos may be used by HBAV for promotional purposes in the event your entry is a winner.

JUDGING

Each entry will be judged on its own merits by a panel of distinguished individuals selected for professional expertise in the home building industry.

If there is only one entrant in a category, it does not automatically receive recognition. The entry must have an average score of 70% or higher based on the judging criteria and materials received.
