Virginia DEQ Announces Training Courses for the New Stormwater Management Handbook

The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality has announced a series of virtual and in-person training courses to assist with the implementation of the new Stormwater Management Handbook, scheduled to take effect July 1, 2024 with a one-year ‘transition period’.

Virtual: Virginia Stormwater Management Handbook – Overview and How to Use It

The Department will host an introductory webinar to provide an overview of the new Stormwater Management Handbook.  Topics include:

  • Navigating the new Stormwater Management Handbook
  • Understanding and using the new BMP terminology and categories to communicate with other stormwater and design professionals.
  • Identifying the new “Construction BMPs” (formerly known as erosion and sediment controls) and “Post-Construction BMPs” and locating their technical requirements
  • Locating the updated technical requirements for existing BMPs
  • Employing the regulatory compliance roadmap and stormwater site design process to organize and structure access to information in the new Handbook.

The Department recommends that stakeholders watch one of the three overview webinars before participating in any in-person sessions. Recordings of the webinars will be sent via email to everyone who registers.

Virtual:  Virginia Runoff Reduction Method (VRRM) 4.1

DEQ and their consultants Tammy Cohen (ERG) and Clay Hodges (LYCA) will offer live online training on the updated VRRM 4.1.

Two webinars (9:30am – 11:30am) are scheduled. The course description is included on the registration page.  Webinars will be recorded, and recordings will be emailed to all individuals who register. Two contact hours per webinar are relevant for Plan Reviewers and Combined Administrators.
